BAM Construction in the Midlands has been chosen to deliver a £33 million retail and residential regeneration building project in Shirley, West Midlands on behalf of Shirley Advance, a joint venture between Helical Bar and Coltham Developments. BAM has its head offices in Coventry and has delivered hundreds of millions of pounds worth of new facilities across the Midlands.   As well as an 85,000 sq ft (7,897 sq m) ASDA superstore, BAM will also build 70,000 sq ft of additional retail space providing about 20 new retail units and a 500+ space underground car park. The development will also include 27 three bedroom townhouses and 56 one and two bedroom apartments, for a mix of private and affordable housing.  Once completed the development will have an end value of c£85 million.   The project originated in 2004 and the team has had to carefully navigate a series of planning hurdles to come to the market.  It is now due to start on site in the Spring of 2012, with completion scheduled by Spring 2014.   John Mensforth, a construction director for BAM in the Midlands, said:   ‘It is very pleasing that we have been able to work with the client over such a long period of time to ensure that this important project for the area will finally happen. It shows that BAM has the skills and experience to unlock the type of retail and regeneration projects that are becoming viable again after a difficult few years. ‘This scheme will develop valuable and much needed facilities for the people of Shirley.’   Robert Birch of Shirley Advance said:

“We are delighted that BAM are on board.  They are a high calibre business with a great track record and we look forward to delivery of the scheme over the next couple of years.”
