Universal love, total respect

Pride is about humanity, not assumptions

Every day, we are exposed to an endless stream of opinions, headlines, commentary, and online reactions that shape how we see the world. Social media platforms, 24-hour news cycles, and online culture can often encourage quick judgement rather than genuine understanding. Over time, this can create distance between people, turning individuals into assumptions or stereotypes.

During Pride Month, conversations about visibility, inclusion and respect remind us why human connection matters. At the centre of our theme for this year, “Universal love. Total respect.” is the simple but powerful idea that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and understanding.

For me, ‘Universal love. Total respect.’ is about creating an inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone can bring their authentic self to work and feel genuinely valued. While Pride Month provides an important moment to celebrate and reflect, these principles should guide how we treat one another every day, with empathy, fairness, and without bias

Creating inclusive environments starts with recognising the importance of empathy. Empathy does not require everyone to share the same experiences or perspectives. Instead, it asks us to approach people with curiosity rather than assumption, and respect rather than judgement.

Diverse organisations thrive when people feel psychologically safe, valued, and able to contribute authentically. Innovation and collaboration are stronger when individuals feel heard and respected for who they are.

At BAM, this commitment is supported by Proud@BAM, a colleague network focused on creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies. Through ongoing initiatives, awareness and advocacy, the network helps turn values into meaningful action across the organisation.

This can be seen in practice through a range of initiatives, including:

  • Ongoing participation in Pride events, demonstrating visible support for LGBTQ+ communities and creating opportunities for colleagues and allies to engage externally.
  • Encouraging the use of pronouns in email signatures and collaboration tools such as Teams, helping to normalise inclusive behaviours in everyday interactions.
  • Creating resources on allyship, and supporting trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming colleagues, building awareness and confidence across teams.
  • The development of a Trans Charter, reinforcing a clear commitment to inclusion, respect, and equitable treatment.

Together, these actions help create an environment where colleagues feel supported, respected and able to bring their authentic selves to work. They contribute to building a culture where people feel recognised and valued, while bringing to life what it means to be Inclusive and Collaborative at BAM..”

Small actions often have the greatest impact. Choosing inclusive language, listening before responding, amplifying underrepresented voices, and challenging unfair assumptions all help create environments where people feel respected and valued.

Importantly, humanising one another does not mean avoiding disagreement or pretending differences do not exist. Respectful cultures are not built on uniformity. They are built on the understanding that people can hold different experiences and viewpoints while still treating one another with dignity.

At the heart of Pride Month is a reminder that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, understanding, and respect. In a world increasingly shaped by fast opinions and online narratives, choosing to see the individual behind the label has never been more important.

“Universal love. Total respect.” is not only a message for Pride Month. It is a mindset that can shape how we work, communicate, and support one another every day.
