Safety

Everyone safe and well every day

We all want to go home safe, healthy and well at the end of each day. It’s that simple and that important.

Across the UK and Ireland, thousands of people work together at BAM to plan, build and maintain the places that shape our communities. Each one of them deserves to work in an environment where they feel protected, respected and supported. That’s why safety matters, because people matter.

Our vision of everyone safe and well every day captures that belief. It’s our commitment to the people who make everything we do possible: our colleagues, our partners, our supply chain and the communities we serve.

Everyone has a part to play in keeping themselves and others safe, and safety only works when it’s personal.

So safety isn’t a checklist or a target at BAM: it’s a mindset. And it’s non-negotiable. That’s the only way to create and sustain a culture built on care, trust and accountability.

We don’t walk by, which means we encourage our teams to speak up, stop work and share ideas whenever they see an opportunity to make things safer. That openness builds trust, and trust keeps people safe.

Our Safe and Well leadership teams across our regions and business units bring people together to share learning, challenge assumptions and set new standards. It’s how we make sure our safety culture stays strong, consistent and alive across every project.

“Health, Safety and Wellbeing is about people, and nothing is more important to us at BAM. Our focus on reducing risk, and creating positive working environments will help us achieve our goal of Everyone Safe and Well Every Day. As an industry leader, we collaborate and share to support industry improvement.”

Living our Life Saving Rules and Safety Principles

Our six Life Saving Rules and eight safety principles are the foundation of how we work safely. They’re more than instructions to follow; they’re promises we make to ourselves and to one another. Simple, human commitments that protect lives and strengthen trust.

They remind us always to plan our work before we start, to understand the risks and to make sure the right protections are in place.

They guide us to wear the correct protective equipment, keep our access routes clear and protect ourselves and our colleagues from falls, moving vehicles and other hazards.

They call on us to verify energy sources, isolate live services (like electricity supplies) before anyone starts work and make sure that every lift and operation is properly controlled and communicated.

The principles also reflect our respect for the environments we work in. That includes handling materials with care and protecting buried or overhead services.
Vitally, they remind us to think before we act. If something doesn’t feel right, we stop. We speak up. We make it safe.

Above all, the Life Saving Rules and principles are about people. They ask us to look after our own wellbeing, to care for the health of others and to share what we learn so that everyone benefits. Living by these means that safety becomes second nature: part of who we are, not something we only think about when things go wrong.

Our promise

Safety isn’t a campaign or a slogan, it’s a promise we live by.

We’ll keep learning, listening and leading so that every person connected with BAM goes home safe and well every day.

Because when people feel safe, supported and valued, we can make so much more possible.
