BAM delivers phase 1 of Ceannt Station, Galway redevelopment

BAM has successfully completed Phase 1 of the Ceannt Station redevelopment in Galway, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the station, an important transport link for the city.

Delivered on behalf of Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), the works were completed safely and on programme within a live city‑centre station, while managing interfaces with daily rail operations. The project has also required sensitive delivery within a protected historic structure which dates back to 1851.

Phase 1 delivered a new main train hall, three new rail platforms (platforms 3, 4 and 5), a curved glazed roof structure, a new southern entrance, concourse and waiting areas, as well as new passenger facilities and retail units. This increases capacity and improves circulation.

The delivery of Phase 1 relied on detailed planning and close collaboration between BAM, Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), the design team, and the wider supply chain.  Safety, coordination and quality were critical throughout delivery.

The project was delivered by BAM for Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), with support from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and the National Transport Authority.

Following the completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 works have now started on the northern concourse. This phase includes conservation works to the protected north station building, originally opened in 1851, alongside the refurbishment of platforms 1 and 2. Once complete, the redevelopment will deliver a modern, fully integrated and accessible transport hub, strengthening connectivity in Galway city and supporting sustainable travel across the region.
