BAM completes overnight bridge operation at Leyton station

Overnight operation delivers new bridge at Leyton station

While London slept over the August Bank Holiday weekend, a new steel overbridge was lifted into place at Leyton Underground station. The bridge was installed in a carefully planned overnight operation, with the entire structure lifted into the station in one piece during a planned track possession. It marks an important milestone in the project to make Leyton station step-free for the first time, with the team completing the work in time for the first train of the day.

“This was a complex piece of work, with absolutely no room for error. After 18 months of preparation, detailed planning and enabling works, the overbridge was successfully installed. The success belongs to the whole team at Leyton station.”

The operation presented a significant logistical challenge, with a directional westbound closure of the nearby A12 required alongside the railway possession. BAM and joint venture partner Taylor Woodrow worked closely with Transport for London and other stakeholders to coordinate the operation and safely deliver the bridge into position.

More than 23,000 people use Leyton station every day.

When complete, the new overbridge will form part of a step-free route between the street and platforms, with two new lifts and staircases also being delivered. A new station entrance, back-of-house rooms and larger ticket hall with eight passenger gates will improve passenger flow and provide capacity for future growth.

Most importantly, the upgrade will make Leyton station step-free for the first time, making journeys easier and more accessible for the people who use the station every day.
