1874

St Paul’s Cathedral Choir School, London

1874

One of our first building projects. The school wanted to enlarge the choir to 40 boys and 18 men so required the building of a new choir school. In January 1874 the foundation stone of the new choir house in Carter Lane was laid and in a year’s time it was ready for occupation.

1880

Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge

1880

Harvey Nichols, the upmarket department store, was founded in 1813. By the late 1880s, the business was so successful it had to move to bigger premises. BAM built the new department store as we know it today, designed by CQ Stephens. We also built new extensions in 1923 and 1931. And in 1974, we made extensive alterations including installing ten new escalators.

1893

County Hall, Surrey

1893

The new County Hall was built between 1891 and 1893 after BAM successfully tendered for the contract with a bid of £41,964. An imposing building, the new County Hall was officially opened on 13 November 1893, with viewings by invitation. The building, now Grade II listed, is still the County Council's headquarters today, but as in 1889 it is still not actually located in Surrey!

1897

Tate Britain Gallery, London

1897

Construction began in 1893 and the gallery opened on 21 July 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. However, from the start it was commonly known as the Tate Gallery, after its founder Sir Henry Tate, and in 1932 it officially adopted that name. The gallery is on the site of the former Millbank Prison.
