BAM Construct UK achieved a ‘bronze’ ranking in the annual Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index, the UK’s ‘Premier League’ benchmark of corporate responsibility. The company’s score of 78.5% in the construction and materials sector is just short of the silver category and represents a 15% improvement on its score last year (the first time BAM entered).

Over 140 leading companies use the Index as a management tool providing a systematic approach to managing, measuring and reporting on our business impact on society and on the environment. BAM is positioned above the average for the construction and materials sector in ten out of 13 categories across the Index. The company beat or levelled with the overall Index average in five categories: environmental management, workplace management, climate change, health safety and wellbeing, employee development and assurance processes. The construction and materials sector was ranked behind the Index in 11 out of the 13 benchmarks, however. Caroline Cook, BAM’s Head of CSR, said, ‘This is only BAM’s second inclusion in the Index, reflecting our commitment to transparently benchmarking what we do against other leading companies. ‘Measurement is the key to improvement. If you don’t know how you are performing then it is difficult to demonstrate that you are making progress. External assessment adds trust and significance for the clients and communities we work with. ‘BAM expects to see its performance rise next year because of improvements we are already implementing.  Over the coming year we will be focusing on reducing our environmental impact further, measuring our community impact more systematically and broadening our responsible sourcing activities. In the current climate it is more important than ever to address these issues, and it makes good business sense too.’

In March BAM Construct UK also gained a listing in the UK’s 100 Best 100 Companies to Work For, published this March in the Sunday Times.
