Environmental management

Environmental managementBAM is committed to minimising its environmental impact and to promoting good practice within the construction industry. Our business is certified to the environmental management standard, ISO 14001, and we produce an environmental management plan for all offices and projects. Reducing our impact on climate change by saving energy, reducing waste, and streamlining processes all make good business sense as they save money too.

We monitor our impacts and can demonstrate we are improving our performance year-on-year. Our online environmental monitoring system BAM SMaRT, introduced at the beginning of 2010, has transformed the way we collect data from our sites, saving time in data collection, enabling us to focus on reducing our impacts.

Reducing our carbon impact, minimising waste and diverting waste from landfill are our primary environmental issues. We have measured our carbon footprint for the fourth year in a row, and in 2010 we achieved our target of halving waste to landfill by 2012, two years ahead of schedule. We are now also certified to CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme), demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon impact.

See our 2011 Sustainability Report for further details.

Design for sustainability

Design for sustainabilityThe sustainability rating of a building is heavily influenced by the design, so BAM has more opportunity to influence our clients in creating greener building solutions on Design and Build or PFI projects.

In BAM Design, the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and 3D modelling is revolutionising the way we design, plan and manage building developments. Planning and visualising our projects virtually helps us create design alternatives, optimise solutions, undertake ‘clash detection’ and carry out ‘what if’ analyses. It guides us to a more cost effective way of constructing our buildings. BIM is now a standard element of our design offering and it will become an intrinsic part of our construction tender and project implementation processes, significantly streamlining the actual build.
