700 Mile cycle by BAM across the UK starts in Edinburgh, ends in Exeter

BAM's 700 mile, 70-person, nine-leg charity bike challenge!
Over 70 enthusiastic cyclists from construction services, property development and facilities management company, BAM Construct UK, are getting into gear to take part in a charity bike ride from Edinburgh to Exeter for a nine leg relay between the companies offices.
The BAM Bikes Scotland Cycle Team has kicked off the first leg of the route on 10 September leaving the company’s Calder Road office in Edinburgh at 8 am this morning and will cover an impressive 191.93km (110 miles), before arriving in Newcastle at around 4 pm. Eight other teams from BAM will cover the remaining 590 miles eventually arriving in Exeter on 20 September. The cycle has already raised over £26,000 for children’s charity, Barnardo’s.
Mark Turner, FM Business Systems Analyst with BAM FM Ltd said, “Barnardo’s is our company’s supported charity and we’ve been trying to come up with an idea for an event which would raise a fair amount of money but also be challenging to us, and fun. Having been out for a few practise cycles, however, I’m not sure how much of it will be fun! The company has always been very supportive of the cycle to work scheme so it seemed a natural choice.
“A few of the team, such as Reid Cunningham in Scotland and Lee Bibby in Liverpool, are extremely fit. Reid’s a prolific triathlon athlete, and has been our mentor which has been great. BAM Plant have provided support vehicles, with our colleagues enlisted to help in the event of punctures or any other mishaps. We’re all up for it and can’t wait now to put our training to the test.”
The event has uncovered a few interesting facts – one man did not even own a bicycle when he signed up for the challenge!
The route will cover –

11/9/2012 Newcastle to Leeds
12/9/2012 Leeds to Manchester
