Henry

Project Manager

Henry

I joined BAM Construction while completing my MSc in Civil Engineering. Having initially worked in construction abroad, BAM appealed to me because of the projects they are involved in and the range of quality training opportunities that are available.

I’m now a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). BAM’s Learning and Development department gave me great support and the company paid my professional review fee and annual membership subscription, which really helped.

At BAM, I’ve been involved in site engineering, management, temporary works and tenders. Every project has been unique and exciting but the current one, King’s Cross Central Eastern Goods Yard (KXC-EGY) happens to be the most interesting. I have been involved right from the tender stage, site investigation/ design, and now into the construction phase. Every day is different, and this is the best aspect of my job.

BAM’s attitude towards health and safety and the regional approach of its projects are parts of the culture that stand out and appeal to me. And the people are great. They’re interesting and friendly and this results in the company having a family feel.

If you want to succeed at BAM, you should love challenges and be happy to meet all sorts of people.

Regional Planning Manager

Martyn

I’ve always been interested in construction. I originally wanted to be a civil engineer because, as a boy, that’s what I thought the people who built everything were called.

After graduating from John Moores University, my working life began as a graduate trainee with Bovis Construction. I worked my way up from assistant site manager to site manager before moving into planning.

I knew some people who already worked at BAM before I joined and it was their enthusiasm towards the company and people that made working here attractive. The company does have great people. And there’s a real ‘can-do’ culture that encourages new ideas and improvements to be tried.

No two projects I’ve worked on have been the same but they’ve all been good, whether it’s because of the actual building’s prestige or the spirit within the site team.

There are constant challenges in my work for BAM. The most exciting has been developing the North West region’s planning department, from implementing procedures and setting targets and goals through to recruitment and staff motivation.

The best aspect of my job has to be the continuous and ever-changing challenges set by customers. The worst aspect is that there are too many Everton fans in the office!
