Our employees

Our employeesBAM is committed to creating a working environment where everyone feels safe, is part of a team, valued and able to realise their full potential. The success of our business depends on employing talented, motivated, professional employees. We strive to create an environment where employees can develop and grow in an inspiring team environment. The actions of our people are also important to us in achieving our long term sustainability aims.

Health, safety and well-being

Health, safety and well-beingBAM is committed to providing an incident free and zero harm environment. We produce health and safety management plans for all projects, and have a programme of safety audits on all sites. Senior management has reaffirmed the company’s vision of a zero harm environment. With this emphasis we are focusing on reporting near misses and engaging with operatives to involve them in understanding and managing risks on site.

The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) software is revolutionising the way we construct buildings. By building them virtually before the works start onsite, we can re-engineer certain aspects of the building removing safety risks. This detailed planning also helps save time, resources and costs.

Further details of our health and safety performance in 2010 are provided in our Sustainability Report.

Creating a great place to work

Learning and developmentCreating an inclusive working environment where all our employees feel valued and have the right skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to the business, is a vital component of creating a great place to work. We grow talent within the company and equip our managers with the skills that will enable them to develop their people effectively. We want to continue to attract the best people so that BAM continues to grow and thrive. Our staff turnover continues to be one of the lowest in the sector, helping to build long-term partnerships with our clients.

Best Companies to work for

We now give each employee up to two days’ paid leave a year to volunteer during working hours. Volunteering strengthens community links and also the personal development of our employees.

See our 2010 Sustainability Report for further details.
