Our projects span seven main markets with an almost equal number of contracts in the public and private sectors: education, retail, mixed use development, health, office, leisure and law and order.

Customer feedback

Continuous improvement is part of BAM's working philosophy and we improve by listening to our customers. At the end of a project we ask them to rate our performance from one to ten in a number of categories. We share this knowledge throughout the company to contribute to our ability to deliver an ever-improving service to our customers.


Directors

James Wimpenny, BSc (Hons) MCIOB

North East Regional Director

James Wimpenny James joined the company in 1985 as a graduate trainee and progressed through a number of roles from general foreman to construction director. He was appointed as Regional Director, North East in 2006 and is also a director of BAM Construction Ltd.

During his 23 years with BAM, James has worked on numerous projects throughout northern England. These have included complex refurbishment projects, schools, colleges, hospitals, offices and leisure facilities. In 2001, James also spent a year on secondment with Royal BAM Group in Holland looking at ways of improving the group's performance across all its operating companies.

Richard Dakin, HND, Dip Construction Management and Economics

Midlands Regional Director

Richard Dakin Richard joined the company in 1984 and became Regional Director, Midlands in 1989. Appointed as a director of BAM Construction in 2004, he is also a trustee director of the company's pension scheme.

Richard's early career was construction–based. His experience covers a wide portfolio of project and contract types in construction management roles on major and complex buildings.

Since assuming responsibility for the Midlands, Richard has successfully developed BAM’s regional profile. BAM is now one of the leading construction organisations in the area and continues to successfully deliver major projects in the public, private, commercial and retail sectors.

Ray Ellis, BSc, MSc, MRICS

London Regional Director

Ray EllisSince joining BAM in 1978, Ray has progressed from trainee surveyor to regional director for London. During his time with the company, Ray has successfully delivered numerous high–profile newbuild and refurbishment projects.

Under Ray's leadership, BAM has built a solid reputation in the capital having delivered a range of iconic buildings that have received excellent client feedback.

Steve Byrne, FCIOB

North West Regional Director

Steve ByrneSteve joined BAM Construction eight years ago as pre–construction director of the North West business unit. He was appointed as regional director in 2002 and a director of BAM Construction in 2004.

As well as operational responsibility for the North West business unit, Steve sits on the learning and development committee and is the coordinator with the BAM Construction board on retail and environmental matters.

Steve Tapson, ACIOB, FFB

Western Regional Director

Steve TapsonSteve has worked in the construction industry for over 35 years and has spent the last 14 with BAM. He initially worked on a wide variety of construction projects as part of the commercial team in London. Then, in 1997, he transferred to the West Country to take up the role of Commercial Director.

Steve was invited to join the board of BAM Construction in 2007 as Regional Director for the Western Region.

Nigel Comben

South East Regional Director

Nigel CombenNigel joined BAM in 1974 and followed a career path into contracts management. After working on a wide variety of projects throughout the UK, Nigel progressed to become construction director, South East.

This role saw him assume responsibilities for many projects and developments within the healthcare, commercial, education and retail markets. Nigel was appointed to the board of BAM Construction Ltd in 2007 as regional director and is currently responsible for all operations within the South East.

Ken Irving, MCIOB

Scotland Regional Director

Ken IrvingKen joined the construction industry in 1965 as a management trainee, and in the early part of his career worked for a number of leading contractors, progressing from general foreman to construction director. He worked on projects within the North of England and Scotland with particular emphasis on complex city centre sites in the commercial, health and retail sectors.

Ken joined BAM in 1995 as Construction Director and was involved in such iconic projects as Glasgow Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. He became Regional Director in 2010. One if his ambitions is to develop the use of leading-edge technology within the construction process.

Ken is on the committee of the GFW in Glasgow which promotes the development of Celtic music throughout Scotland.
