Cressex Community School

Description

Cressex Community School Cressex Community School - Concept design Cressex Community School - Concept design (click to enlarge)

This project replaces the current Cressex Community School under Wave 2 BSF One School Pathfinder funding as part of the SECE (now IESE) framework.

The school provides a new 1,100-place secondary school with a Business and Enterprise specialist status. The building’s form is compact with three curriculum wings radiating from a central ETFE-covered courtyard space. A fourth block encloses the courtyard on the south west side and accommodates the sports, assembly hall and main curriculum and social spaces. A triple-height glazed elevation to the northwest creates the main entrance to the building onto a new public piazza. This building also provides a reduced footprint and increases the land available for sport and social activities.

Pathfinder funding requires a 60% carbon reduction and the project is currently on track to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.

Design Features

  • A number of sustainable features are incorporated to reduce the building’s carbon footprint:
  • Geo-thermal piles using ground source energy to heat and cool the building link to roof-mounted heat exchanges
  • Bio-mass boilers
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Exposed concrete structure to temper the internal environment
  • Heat recovery on mechanical ventilation systems to large volume spaces
  • A semi-treated ETFE courtyard space

Challenges

  • Minimise disruption of existing school
  • To create a highly sustainable building within budget
